Generation Three

< 1-2-3-4 >

40. JOHN3 W. HENDERSON (David2, James1); born 26 November 1822; died 9 March 1861; buried in Memory Acres, Pleasantville;148 married HANNAH PAULINE TYRELL, born circa 1821 in New York state; died 2 September 1865; buried in Memory Acres Cemetery, Pleasantville.149

Pauline was a daughter of Benjamin (born 11 November 1785; died 12 September 1852) and Phoebe Tyrell (born 10 November 1791; died 29 September 1872) of Allegheny Township, Venango County, and Eldred Township, Warren County. Benjamin and Phoebe are buried in Memory Acres Cemetery, Pleasantville, Pennsylvania.150 Benjamin’s land in Allegheny Township was known as the Dawson tract. In Benjamin’s will,151 written 19 August 1852, recorded 5 October 1852: “… I give and bequest unto my dear wife Phebe all my personal property of every description except so much as I may herein after reserve for my daughter Pauline Henderson . . .” There is an 1860 Orphans Court document152 by John W. Henderson citing J. A.? Tyrell in administering the estate of Benjamin Tyrell, who died 12 September 1852. “J. W. Henderson is the husband of one of the daughters.”

John Henderson was a merchant in Pleasantville, Allegheny Township. From the Sesquicentennial of Pleasantville of 1971: “The same year [1850] the second store was built by John Henderson, brother of David Henderson and was situated where Eagle House stood, owned by H. C. Mapes (now Pennsylvania Bank and Trust).” The Sesquicentennial also reports John W. Henderson as the 5th Burgess of Pleasantville, 1858 (for one year).

Venango County Orphans Court, Docket 2, page 86:153
February twenty second 1864. Read in open Court … The petition of John A Dale, administrator of all _____ singular the goods and chattels, rights and credits which of John W. Henderson late of the Borough of Pleasantville, Venango County, deceased. Respectfully represents that the said John W. Henderson died on or about the day [then a blank space] of March 1861 intestate leaving to survive him a widow, Hannah Paulina Henderson and eight children, to wit Elias Cornelius, Adalia [Adelia] Augusta, Norton Chester, Denalonzo [Don Alonzo] Cashman, Harriet Pauline, Lewis Cook, Luella, and Charles Richman all of whom are minors and the last six of whom have for their guardian said Hannah Paulina Henderson …
The petitioner then states that the personal estate is not sufficient to cover debts and he [John A, Dale] wants to sell two tracts of John W. Henderson’s real estate located in Eldred Township, Warren County. One tract was conveyed to John by “Robert L. [or S.] Tyrell and Harriet his wife by deed date the first day of Oct AD 1856.” This is good confirmation, although not proof, that Pauline, John’s wife, was a Tyrell. There is another petition by John A. Dale to sell real estate, dated 2 February 1864.154 This is similar to the Docket 2 document, above, except some of the children’s names are spelled slightly different and apparently correctly.

Children of John and Hannah Pauline (Tyrell) Henderson:155

139 i. Elias4 Cornelius Henderson; born circa 1841 in Pennsylvania; married Hannah Kerr, born 18 January 1842 in Pennsylvania (a daughter of Robert and Hannah Gardner Kerr156). There was also another Elias Henderson, born circa 1842, who, if my interpretation of the 1850 Allegheny Township census157 is correct, was the last born child of John Henderson’s parents, David and Jane Watson Henderson. Since each was enumerated in a different household in 1850, they would not appear to be the same person. But possibly Elias was enumerated twice. In 1880, Elias C. and Hannah, no children, were in Stark County, Ohio, where Elias was farming. They were next door to Marcus and Esther (Kerr) Henderson (#44) and their large family.158
140 ii. David W. Henderson; born 27 February 1844; died 6 October 1845.159
141 iii. Adelia Augusta Henderson; born 1848; married Thomas Hardenburg, born circa 1831 in New York state. He was a farmer. No information on children; in 1880, Luella Henderson, Adelia's sister, was living with Thomas and Adelia.160 A Venango County, Pennsylvania, Orphans Court document,161 pertaining to the account of the guardian, that is D. W. Henderson, lists Adelia A. Henderson, “now Adelia A. Hardenburg, minor child of John W. Henderson.”
142 iv. John Albert Henderson; born 28 February 1849; died 20 February 1853; buried in Memory Acres Cemetery.162 Perhaps in error, but the 1850 census for Allegheny Township lists John Albert and Adelia (as well as mother Pauline) being born in New York; whereas John W. and Elias were listed as being born in Pennsylvania; however in 1860, all were listed as born in Pennsylvania.
143 v. Norton Chester Henderson; born October 1851; married Clara E. [—?—], born September 1853 in Pennsylvania.
Children known from the 1900 federal census for Oakland Township, Venango County, Pennsylvania (census page 1B), where Norton was enumerated as a merchant:
(a) Maude Henderson, born February 1878, listed as a post mistress in 1900.
(b) Lilly Henderson, born July 1880.
144 vi. Don (also Denalonzo and Don Alonzo) Cashman Henderson; born July 1852; died (tentative) 18 July 1917 in Pleasantville; this is based on a Don C. Henderson in Venango County Index of Wills.163 Don C. Henderson was a tax collector in Pleasantville, Pennsylvania. He apparently did not marry. He was enumerated as a grocer in 1880 when he was living with his uncle David W. Henderson (#43) in Pleasantville, Pennsylvania.164
145 vii. Harriet Pauline Henderson; born circa 1853. 146 viii. Lewis Cook Henderson, born 11 July 1856; died 3 August 1876; buried in Memory Acres Cemetery, Pleasantville, Pennsylvania.165
146 viii. Lewis Cook Henderson; born circa 1859. In 1880, Luella was living with her sister Adelia (#141) and Adelia's husband Thomas Hardenberg in Pawnee County, Kansas, where Luella was enumerated as a teacher.
147 ix. Louella Henderson; born circa 1859. In 1880, Luella was living with her sister Adelia (#141) and Adelia's husband Thomas Hardenberg in Pawnee County, Kansas, where Luella was enumerated as a teacher.
148 x. Charles Richmond Henderson.

41. REBECCA3 HENDERSON (David2, James1); born 1823 in Pennsylvania; married WARREN A. LYON, born circa 1820 in New York state. In 1850 Rebecca, Warren and child were living in Allegheny Township, Venango County, where Warren was listed as a chair maker.166

Child of Warren and Rebecca (Henderson) Lyon:

  149 i. Sarah4 Lyon ; born circa 1844.

42. ESTHER3 JANE HENDERSON (David2, James1); born 8 February 1824; died 25 July 1903 in Portland, Chautauqua County, New York; married JOHN FLEMING, born 22 November 1822; died 10 September 1902 in Portland, Chautauqua, County, New York.

John Fleming was a son of Andrew and Ann (McClintock) Fleming. In the 1850 federal census, John (listed as a cabinet maker) and family were in Allegheny Township, Venango County, In the 1860 census, John was listed as a farmer and sawyer in Harmony Township, Venango County (now part of Forest County). Also in the household in 1860, was a William Brown, born circa 1840, a laborer. John and Esther Jane and family moved to Portland, New York, in 1865.167 He was a postmaster in Portland, Chautauqua County, New York.
Children of John and Esther Jane (Henderson) Fleming:
(a) John Wesley Fleming.
(b) Jane Anne Fleming (Davidson).
(c) David Andrew Fleming.
(d) Hugh Marcus Fleming.
(e) Clara May Berenda Fleming.
See #12 of the Fleming web site for sources and more information on John and Esther Jane (Henderson) Fleming and their descendants.

43. DAVID3 W. HENDERSON (David2, James1); born circa 1824–1827; died 10 January 1907;168 married LOUISA JANE LYON, born circa 1835 in New York state.169 Note that David W. Henderson's sister Rebecca also married a Lyon, who was also born in New York state.

David Henderson and family lived in Pleasantville, where David was variously listed in the federal censuses for Allegheny Township as a farmer, tanner and merchant; for example, a grocer in 1870 and a bank cashier in 1880.170 I do not know whether David, Jr., or David, Sr., was the justice of the peace in the October 1858 Fleming–McClintock buggy incident (see McClintocks but suspect he was David, Sr., who did not die until 1859.

In January 1865, David W. Henderson purchased three tracts of land (125 acres, 128 acres and 50 acres) from John Siggins of Allegheny Township for $50,000. The descriptions would indicate that at least one tract was land on Pithole Creek (probably not the Pithole City area).171 Another January 1865 deed has David and wife Jane selling 50 acres of the land to E. E. Lewis of Geneva, Ontario County, New York for $30,000: “… 50 acres and being the parcel conveyed by John Siggins to said David W. Henderson by deed dated 24 January 1865 and being the parcel conveyed by H. Huidekoper, attorney for said Siggins by deed dated 22 April 1851, being part of Holland Land Company tract #172.”172 On 1 February 1865, David and Jane sold land in Allegheny Township, presumably the remainder of that purchased in January 1865, to Abraham Ven Etty? and others for $75,000.173

Children of David and Louisa Jane (Lyon) Henderson:174

  150 i. Mark4 H. Henderson; born circa 1852
+   151 ii. Lola M. Henderson; born July 1854; died 1945; married 1906 Edwin Parshall.
152 iii. Emma Henderson; born circa 1854
153 iv. Carrie L. Henderson; born circa 1855; married 30 September 1885 John L. Mattox, born 15 July 1859, an attorney in Oil City. Child of Carrie and John Mattox was Kate Louisa Mattox, born 18 May 1887.175 Bell (1890), page 885, has a short biographical sketch of John L. Mattox, a son of Thomas C. and Huldah (Leyde) Mattox of Mercer County, Pennsylvania. John Mattox was a Westminster College (New Wilmington, Pennsylvania) graduate, and for several years taught school in Pleasantville. Bell mentions Carrie Henderson being a cashier of the Pleasantville Bank.
  154 v. Jessie M. Henderson; born circa 1863.
155 vi. John A, Henderson; born March 1864. John was living with his father in Pleasantville, Pennsylvania, in 1900.176
